The bar was a favorite watering hole for the pilots of Air America, the CIA-owned air service that ferried personnel, arms, funds, and supplies during the secret war in Laos. It has frequently been alleged that Air America was also used as a transport system for the opium industry controlled by Vang Pao, commander of the Hmong Secret Army.
